Seizures Reported Amongst Vape and E-Cig Users

In April of 2019, the FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D., and Principal Deputy Commissioner Amy Abernethy, M.D., Ph.D.,  released a statement on FDA’s ongoing scientific investigation of potential safety issue related to seizures reported following e-cigarette use

Since this announcement in April, the FDA has received an additional 92 reports of people experiencing seizures after use of e-cigarettes. And at this time of writing, the FDA is currently investigating 127 cases of people suffering from seizures after vaping.

“We’re sharing this early information with the public because as a public health agency, it’s our job to communicate about potential safety concerns associated with the products we regulate that are under scientific investigation by the agency,”

Reporting health issues to FDA

The FDA is encouraging tobacco and E-cig users to report any health issues and tobacco products that:

  • are damaged
  • are defective
  • are contaminated
  • smell or taste wrong

FDA wants to know if you have experienced an unexpected health or safety problem that you believe may have been caused by use of a particular tobacco product. FDA also wants to know about unexpected health or safety problems that may have been caused by being exposed to a tobacco product, even if you were not the user.

These types of health or safety problems could include:

  • fires or explosions
  • burns or other injuries
  • accidental or unintended tobacco product exposures involving children
  • poisonings and other toxicities
  • allergic reactions
  • any unusual reactions following use of or exposure to a tobacco product
